Bouddhanath is Nepal’s largest stupa and the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet. It serves as the center of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu and is rich in symbolism. Seen from above, the Bouddhanath stupa resembles a giant mandala depicting the Buddhist cosmos. Four Dhyani Buddhas mark the cardinal points, while the fifth, Vairocana, is enshrined in the center of the stupa.
Pashupatinath is a Hindu temple on the Bagmati River in Deopatan, 3 km northwest of Kathmandu. Dedicated to Shiva as Pashupati (Lord of Animals), it attracts thousands of pilgrims annually and is well-known beyond the Kathmandu Valley. Non-Hindus cannot enter, but the temple is visible from the opposite riverbank.
With its temples and ancient palaces, Kathmandu Durbar Square enriches your experience of centuries-old civilization. It features the palaces, quadrangles, and courtyards of the Malla and Shah kings.
