Kathmandu has long been considered one of the remotest corners of the world. Rudyard Kipling captured its mystique when he wrote, “the wildest dreams of Kew are the facts of Kathmandu.” For centuries, Kathmandu was forbidden to outsiders. However, since opening its doors to the world in the early 1950s, it has become one of the most desired travel destinations. Today, Kathmandu is a large, bustling, and colorful city, presenting a fascinating mix of the medieval and modern, while facing the common challenges of rapid urbanization: a growing population and increased pollution.
